Joachim Chancho was born in Riudoms, Spain, in 1943. For over thirty years, he has enjoyed  vast critical acclaim in Europe. He belongs to the generation of artists in the seventies whose work was based on the concept of support surface, that is, the only significant elements in painting are the medium itself and its application on the support. Over time, Chancho's creative process led him to progressively reconsider and refine his artistic language.

Chancho has participated since 1969 in numerous individual exhibitions, including two retrospectives of his polyptics in 1995 and in 1999, at the Museum of Modern Art in Tarragona, and one at the Centre d'Art Santa Ṃnica in Barcelona. He has received many prestigious awards in the fields of painting and drawing, among them a grant from the Juan March Foundation in Madrid, and the first prize in painting at the Tarragona Biennial in 1987. His work is part of important collections, such as "La Caixa" Foundation and the Contemporary Art Museum in Barcelona, and the Generalitat de Catalunya Fund, among others. Chancho is also a longtime professor of painting at the Fine Arts Department of the University of Barcelona where he received a doctorate in Fine Arts in 1992.
